Should it Stay or Should it go - you decide!

The Planning application directly below would get rid of the 1939 Old Telephone Exchange in Combe Road. The building has for some years been the home of the Swedenborgian Church. It has been empty since being used by Combe Down Primary School when the School's old 'temporary' classrooms were replaced by the new building. Let us know whether you think the Old Telephone Exchange should be saved or not.

Like most people, I expect, my concern is not whether this building should or should not be saved/demolished. The main issue is: with what will it be replaced? Of course we should be looking at redundant buildings: to see if they can be refurbished for other uses; to consider if removal will contribute to and enhance the immediate environment. If the building is to be replaced, can we expect its replacement to be better in terms of build-quality and will the replacement building make a more significant contribution to the locality?

The existing building lends itself well to a number of uses including; conversion to one large or two medium sized houses, four apartments, cafe-shop-meeting place-internet cafe style venue with residential above, full conversion into retail outlet & cafe-meeting place. The proposed scheme to demolish and replace is simply to increase profit and not to improve the immediate area or local amenities. It's that simple.I run an established property development company so I can speak from experience.Personally, with the existing development on Church Road and this scheme it suggests overdevelopment of this stretch of road.
